Keep this on your finger!

I love how my husband, Mark, proposed! What a keepsake memory. We went to a “movie night” at our church, and when it was over, we stayed to help clean up. After a few minutes of putting chairs away and talking to a friend of mine, I looked for Mark but could not find him. A hand on the small of my back made me turn, and his broad smile greeted me. “Come on the roof with me.” His smooth tenor voice made me willing to do whatever he asked, so I readily agreed.

The fact that he asked me onto the roof made me quiver with excitement. Roofs had always been a special place for us individually and as a couple. I used to do my morning devotions on the roof of my childhood home, and Mark grew up in Guatemala where roofs were like “playgrounds” for the children of the villages. We had our first conversations about courting, sex, and emotional scars on a roof. And we shared our first kiss on a roof in Guatemala….with an active volcano in the distance (story for another time, but yes! It lit my fire!)

Needless to say, I knew something was up! We went outside to the parking lot, climbed a nearby tree and then got onto the roof. Our church had a steeple, so the roof was slanted but not too steep. Once we sat down, we cuddled underneath the cross for a few minutes, enjoying the view of the lights of the city.

After several minutes of talking, Mark cleared his throat (something he always does when he gets nervous) and said, “Cass, when I met you, I knew God put us together for a reason. I value your friendship more than any other relationship I’ve ever had. I know we’re young, but I believe God has big plans for us and I want to make sure we stay together for those plans. I don’t feel complete unless I’m with you.” His dark brown eyes became pleading as if, for a split second, he thought I might disappear on him. “Will you marry me, Honey?”

I could only respond with a tearful nod as he pulled a small box out of his pocket. Glancing up at me with that ever-present smile, he slowly opened it and a gorgeous diamond ring promptly fell out of the box and started rolling down the slanted roof! We both ‘carefully’ dove after it and Mark got a hold of it with his finger. He pulled it up to his foot, took it in his thumb and forefinger, and took my ring finger in his hand.

Slipping the ring onto my finger, he grinned. “Please, keep this on your finger.”

I grinned back and hugged his neck. “I will. Always.”

It hasn’t left my finger since and, therefore, hasn’t rolled off any other roofs! Hahaha! Thank you, Lord, for my husband and my “ring on a rooftop”!

Thank you, PassionateforChrist! It was a joy to write and remember. It reminded me how much i do love my man! Maybe that’s why God constantly urges us to remember Him in the Bible! How often we need to be reminded of how worthy of our love He is!

That is such a special story! The proposal was so beautiful! Must’ve been a little annoying about the ring falling, but I’m so glad you found it! Thank God you have one another <3 May God keep you safe

Thank you so much, Harper! Haha, at the time, we both worked as preschool teachers there so Mark joked that we could have had our classes come out for recess and do a “treasure hunt for Miss Cassie’s ring!” But I am glad he caught it! God is good!
