All of us use language. We enter into the game of language that is already going on with rules in play. We do recognize that there is some flexibility and change over time with how words are used – and thus, adjustments in definitions follow. It is almost unpredictable to know which words will one day have a different nuance.
There is probably no negative issues that arise from a couple in the privacy of their own bedroom playing with language in creating new sexual words. The potential problems potentially arise when they are exported with no explanation – or little explanation to others who read of them.
Someone says, “that word means this to us…and it turns us on sexually”. Someone else hears that word and only knows it (naturally) in its regular context. A demeaning word first comes to them as a demeaning word.
It seems like there must be some limitation to this word changing practice. For example, we have had explanations of new understandings of naturally negative words on MH. In some couples bedrooms, “Bitch”, “slut”, and “whore” have all gotten new paint jobs. That is fine. But, for some people, the new paint doesn’t cover enough.
What if someone on MH said, “I love to get my husband hot by calling him “my sexy Nazi” (or some racial epithet)? Of course, most people would find it hard to peel support the negative connotations in order to see the overall positive use.
Yet, even with that last example, I guess I would say that if a couple understands their new coded words and definitions in such a way that it works for them – they have the freedom to do it and enjoy it to the glory of God! Yet, it is good for us to still recognize that there are people who have not yet made those transitions in definition – as they have in the privacy of their own bedrooms.
In this way, all of us – even though are writing about things that happened in the privacy of our bedrooms – are also writing with a view of other people reading us and understanding us. We don’t want to be phony or inauthentic about our experiences – yet we at some level don’t want to be misunderstood in a way that might cause others to stumble.
For example, I think using the word “fuck” in the bedroom is not a hard sell. Yes, it is used in crude and hurtful ways in society – but at its base – it means what it means! I think when people read that word being used in stories on MH – that they don’t see it as being hurtful or demeaning of the other spouse. I think this would be true for people who even choose not to use “fuck” in their bedroom.
Don’t misunderstand me – I am not in ANY way trying to be the thought police on MH. I am NOT personally offended by other’s usage of “bitch”, “slut” and “whore”. I’m just trying to point out that it is wise for all of us to recognize that our redefining of words is potentially problematic for some.
