Surgery Update

Hey guys! I wanted to give you an update on my wife’s surgery. About a month ago I asked for your prayers concerning her upcoming thyroid surgery.

The surgery itself went well and didn’t take that long. They took her back at 10:30 and we were home by 2:30. Her neck was sore and she was tired from the anesthetic, but that was about it. She had a bad sore throat for the rest of the weekend, but that was about it as far as discomfort after the surgery. And the surgery was on a Friday and she was back to work the following Wednesday.

However, they did discover that it was thyroid cancer. So they had to remove the entire thyroid. The surgeon wants her to do a round of radioactive iodine and then she will be on thyroid meds for the rest of her life.

So we are grateful they caught it and dealt with it and that the surgery went well. But we aren’t completely out of the woods yet. She goes back to the endocronologist on June 1st and we go from there. If she does end up doing the radioactive iodine, that is going to be tough because she will have to be away from everyone (including me and our daughter) for about 3 days because it will make her “radioactive” and that can get on other people. So that part won’t be fun. But I know it’s a necessary step to fully flush out all potential remaining cancer. The surgeon said he’s confident he got it all out, but he suggested this to be on the safe side.

Then it’s just a matter of getting the right dose of thyroid meds. I’m hoping this can all take place quickly so we can relax and enjoy the summer. Since the surgery she has been tired and cold and her sex drive has become basically non-existent. And these are all symptoms of hypothyroidism. Which is what she definitely has now since she doesn’t have a thyroid anymore. So we are asking for continued prayers that she can get on the right meds quickly and that they will work.

I want my wife back! And especially my horny wife! Her not having a sex drive has been tough on both of us. So we’re hoping and praying for her to get on the meds soon and that they will work to eliminate these symptoms she has been having.

So that’s where we are now. Thanks for your prayers on the surgery! And thanks in advance for your continued prayers for her full recovery!

You poor dears! I'm so sorry it was like this! My aunt is also doing chemo and radio, and think her cancer is similar to your wife's. She had to be away from us for quite sometime in intensive care. But I'm also glad that she is a strong woman, God bless her and that your wife is doing well for now and that the surgery went well with no major discomfort, thank the Lord! I'll keep praying for you two and also for your sex life. May I ask how old your daughter is? I'll pray for her too. God be with you

Thanks for your prayers. Our daughter is 20 months old now. She's walking and talking now and having lots of fun. And we're having lots of fun with her. 🙂 Thanks again for your prayers.

Very happy to hear that things went well. Cancer is always frightening, but with thyroid cancer, she should do very well. Unlike so many types of radiation, she will only need to take a pill. Long term side effects are minimal. However, she will not be on her regular thyroid medication until after the radiation is given 5-6 weeks after surgery. When you speak with the endocrinologist, make sure that you speak about dosing her short term thyroid medicine twice a day instead of once a day. It can make a difference in how she feels. Although it is hard going through this type of ordeal, it is hopefully comforting to know that this set back in your lives, including sex lives, should be temporary. Also, her fatigue is very real, so hopefully you will be blessed with the energy to pick up some of the slack in child care and around the house.

I certainly hope so. She goes to the endocronologist on Wednesday and she will find out then what and when the next step is from here. Thanks for your prayers.

Praying everything works out for the both of you ?. My wife also has thyroid issues and hoping and praying nothing serious. We've been married for 42 years and this thyroid issues scares the crap out of me. We can only pray that the Lord will take care of us for his cause ?. Trust in Him and he will provide ! Support your wife and be there when she needs you. A loving and supportive wife is truly a gift from God and should NEVER be taken for granted. God bless ??

Hey guys I wanted to give another quick update.

First, they got her on the thyroid meds. She took the first one on the Wed before Memorial Weekend and after just 4 days she said she could tell a big difference. She felt a lot better overall and she wasn't tired. And we could both tell a difference in her sexually. Just to give an example, for a long time now the ONLY way she could cum was if we used a vibrator on the highest setting and even then it usually took a while. But on Memorial Weekend, I was able to use just my hand on her and she even used just her hand on herself one time and she was able to cum both times. They say it will take a month or two to REALLY get into her system, but we saw a big difference after just 4 days. So we're excited about that.

Second, she went to her follow up with the endocronologist on June 1st. He said she doesn't need to do anything further. He said the cancer was less than a centimeter in size and that the surgery got it all out. So no radioactive iodine treatments are needed. So that's good. Especially since he said that if she were to do that, she would have to be away from children, pets and pregnant women for TEN days and everyone else for 5! Not 3 like we originally thought. So since he feels it isn't necessary, we're not going to do that. Especially since we have too much else going on right now. (Just before the surgery my wife was in a car wreck and the car got damaged. Then just after the surgery, the car blew a head gasket and is overheating. So we have to add an entire gallon of water to it each time we drive it. We're trying to deal with it until we can get a new car. It isn't worth it to fix this one.)

So that's where we are right now. She still has one more follow up with the surgeon, but that shouldn't be a big deal. I think he just wants to make sure she is healing properly. Thanks for your continued prayers.

Such a tough situation but it sounds like you are hopeful and most importantly supportive. So glad to hear that you were able to be intimate with one another and enjoy it. That closeness of intimacy will certainly help as you continue on this journey. Hopefully more sexy times will come!

I am a doctor. The good news is your wife should be fine with no real residual effects, the thyroid gland is the only organ in the body that uses iodine. Thus the radioactive iodine affects no other cells in the body. This is done often and it is fairly easy to adjust thyroid med dosing. I look forward to reading some of your hot posts in the not too distant future, I expect that within 2-3 months this will be past history. Keep your chin up and God Bless you.

Hey doc…the endocrinologist said the cancer cells were so small that they got it all in the surgery so he feels she doesn't need the radioactive iodine.

However she has started on the thyroid medicine Synthroid. She's been on it about 3 weeks now, but she's only felt minimal results. The first few days of taking it she felt a little better, but then she dropped back down to not seeing much results ever since. She is still feeling tired and has no sex drive. Any advice??

I searched for some natural female libido enhancements. I found one called "Her Solution." And I got on Amazon and searched for "Her Solution pills" and there are lots of other ones. I was reading reviews on them today and most reviews say they felt noticeable increase in sexual desire and energy. However one review on one brand said not to take it if you have high blood pressure. My wife has high blood pressure. She's going to ask her doctor about it obviously, and we're going to continue researching it because that was just one brand, but I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. Do you know of something like a libido enhancer for women that would work for her?

I am in the same situation as your wife. Synthroid did the same for me – initially some help, then nothing. It took me switching doctors and fighting, but I now take Armour thyroid. It has been a God send. I have tried several brands of thyroid meds, and Armour is the only one that works for me. I go in every six months to have blood work done and often I do have to have my meds adjusted, but it is worth the Doctor visits and lab draws to stay on top of things. For some reason a lot of Docs do not like to dose with Armour, but it is life changing for me. I have several friends, co-works who say the same thing – synthroid was awful and it took moving to Armour, then dancing around with doseages for a bit to finally hit the sweet spot. It can be daunting, but do not give up! Support her and help her fight for good care. Also insist that Docs DO NOT dose by TSH. For cancer patients, TSH should be below zero to help keep the cancer from returning. If her Doc doses by "range" usually .5-5, she will feel lousy and you risk helping the cancer return. They will tell her …." your labs are all in normal range"….but she will not feel like herself. The majority of thyroid patients feel best with a TSH of 1 or lower. If the Doc refuses to dose this way, get another Doc. My thyroid Doc also keeps tabs on my hormones – progesterone, estrogen and testosterone. My sex life got a 1000% better when he balanced my sex hormones AND my thyroid hormones!!! Seems the two problems go hand in hand – when one is off, it sets the others out of whack. Best of luck – prayers your way!
