Sarah – It is interesting to note how the english translators have treated that passage of SOS 5.2-5. First off, I became aware of its connection to M by an early 1980s book "The Gift of Sex" by Dr Cliff and Joyce Penner. So I did a breakdown of the Hebrew for those verses and found out a few things. First one was there were 2 words for myrrh: Myrrh itself and "sweet smelling myrrh" which was dripping from her fingers. I went thru some concordances and other texts and found out the "sweet smelling" was better translated as liquid, and condensed into droplets. (very similar to how I read that vaginal lubrication was formed on the inside of the vagina) It was very much masturbation and was descriptively correct to modern medical standards.
Another thing (probably added to confuse the issue) was the addition of the word "door" in verse 4 of the King James. There is no door in the Hebrew. It says "he put his hand by the HOLE" which aroused her feelings. The word for hole is used elsewhere in the OT to mean a snake hole in the ground or a body cavity, including an eye socket.
So what hole would arouse those feelings?
