The Perfect Marriage Proposal

Every relationship is unique, as is every marriage proposal. I thought it would be nice to hear from other MH couples how you and your spouse first met.

Also, if you are the wife, how did your husband propose to you?

And, if you are the husband, how did you propose to your wife?

I MET MY HUSBAND Jamie in high school. We saw each other in the hallways many times but never really talked until we met again at a high school dance. We were both in grade 11. He was very shy and a bit awkward at first while gathering the strength to ask me for a dance at the beginning of the night. It was so funny that we both laughed, even while dancing.

During slow dances, we talked a lot about many things while our bodies were pressed against each other, and it was nice; I liked it. I felt very comfortable because he didn’t grope me like other boys did. When the night was over, he asked if he could walk me home since it was dark and it was snowing out. I told my girlfriends I was walking home with a boy, and they all laughed and said to be careful.

After a twenty-minute walk, we arrived at my house. I gave Jamie a hug and thanked him. Jamie then hugged me and gave me a very soft kiss on my cheek and asked if we could go out next weekend on a date. I said I would love to, but I was going downhill skiing with friends. Then he surprised me and said he skied. Odd, I thought, because I had never seen him before. But we found out we skied at different resorts.

We agreed to meet where I skied the next weekend. We had so much fun together, spraying each other with snow when we stopped and at times throwing snowballs. I hate to say it, but I was more advanced and taught him how to ski better. I’m sure my mom and dad taught me how to ski before I could walk.

We became very good friends from that day on, eventually dating and spending all of our free time together. After graduating, we both attended the same university and continued skiing together. During this time, I decided to join the CSP (Canadian Ski Patrol). I started training in early fall, and by the end of the ski season, I passed all the tests in the class and on the slopes and was fully certified as a ski patroller.

By this time, we loved each other and our relationship was very serious. We talked about many things including the “what if’s”: What if we were engaged? What if we lived together? What if we were married? What if we had children? During these conversations, I always had butterflies in my stomach because I loved Jamie; he was the most important person in my life. I was hoping in my heart without letting him know that I wanted to be engaged, wanted to be married, and yes, I wanted more than anything to have children and raise a family with this wonderful man.

Fast-Forward Two Years:

We went skiing with our friends on a very warm and beautiful Saturday. When we arrived, I went to the locker room to change into my clothes and to get my CSP Arm Band, a 1st Aid Kit, and a Walkie Talkie. We did several runs together, and then I heard my name called on the walkie-talkie. I was told a ski instructor called in sick and couldn’t teach the children. Because I also taught children and adults many times, I was asked to meet the students and teach them based on their skill levels. I was also asked to look after any calls for medical aid as there was only myself and one other guy on patrol.

Ski lessons went really well. The adults, teens, and young children always watched and listened to my instructions. I especially loved watching the four- to six-year-old children on the slope.

Suddenly I heard a call for help and medical aid on the radio from the top of one of the chair lifts. The other patroller told me to look after this call because he was on the far side of the hill, and it would take too long for him to go. But he did assure me he would get there as soon as possible.

I quickly went to the chair lift and rode to the top while talking to the lift attendant, asking what and exactly where the problem was. When I reached the top, I skied to the area where I was told the accident happened. I didn’t realize it at the time, but while making my way up, I recognized a few faces; they were my friends, and they were pointing in a direction and yelling to me, “There’s a guy that is badly hurt after hitting a tree.”

OMG, I thought! This is serious! When I finally reached the area, there were a few people in a circle near this guy that was on the ground. I recognized one as my girlfriend and another as a very good friend of Jamie’s. My gf just pointed and said it was Jamie!! Oh My God!!!! My boyfriend!!!!

As I got closer to him, I noticed a bright red colour on the snow and the front of his ski jacket. I remember crying and praying to God to help Jamie and to help me. I asked Jamie where the pain was, and he just moaned while holding his blood-soaked stomach. I yelled to the people in the area to get a stretcher from the lift and come back here right away. I also called on the radio for a skidoo and sleigh. I wondered why the other people didn’t do what I asked them to do. I know I swore at them.

After opening my 1st Aid Kit, I unzipped Jamie’s blood-soaked jacket and lifted his wet, bloody sweater to see how bad the cut was and what I needed to do. I remember I yelled and swore again at the people to get what I asked for while keeping my eyes on Jamie’s eyes, assuring him that he was fine and that I would look after him.

When my hands grabbed his t-shirt, one of his hands grabbed mine, and he smiled at me and then said, “Everything will be fine.”

I was crying while yelling at him to be still. I told him not to talk and to be serious. Behind me, I could hear some people quietly laughing, and I called them assholes.

Then Jamie said he loved me more than anything. The way he looked and the way he said that, I felt he was in shock. I went to lift his t-shirt up to see the wound so I could dress it, but Jamie told me to stop.

“I can’t, baby! I need to do this! I need to see how bad the cut is!”

Then he told me to hold his other hand and pray. He didn’t know this, but when I found out who was injured, I started praying to God right away. When I took Jamie’s hand in mine, I felt something. I thought it was a small pebble or a small broken twig from a tree. It was something else, but I didn’t know what.

Jamie looked at me again and said, “Lori. Will you marry me?”

I told him to be serious and to stay still.

Jamie said again, “Lori, I love you with all my heart. Will you marry me?”

Then his hand left mine, and he told me to look.

Oh My God!!!! It was a ring!!!!! It was my turn to go into shock. Then everyone started laughing and applauding.

Jamie stood up, apologized, and said he wasn’t hurt, he wasn’t bleeding, he didn’t fall. The red on the snow and his clothes was the red dye used on the snow on the slopes. He kneeled in front of me, took the ring, and put it on my finger. “Lori, I want to marry you.”

I wanted to slap his face so hard, but I couldn’t. I started crying again, knelt in front of him, we hugged and kissed and then I yelled: YES! I LOVE YOU, BABY! I WILL MARRY YOU!!

After I said yes, Jamie and I were showered with snow.

Everyone skied to the racks near the chalet, and we all walked inside.  When Jamie and I walked through the main doors, all the people inside started cheering. I was later told that everyone—my friends, all the staff, the owners, and even the other guy who was my partner on patrol—knew what Jamie was going to do. I was so embarrassed, yet so happy.

With much love,

Lori

    How sweet 🙂

I unfortunately dropped the ball with my bride, as my proposal went something along the lines of coming home one day and saying “Hey, I think we should get married.” ? She was to sweet to tell me in the moment how little she cared about a ceremony, but how she always wanted a special proposal. We’re married six years in July, and I’m grateful she still enjoys my insanity, lol.

My girlfriend & I had been dating about 3 months when I had a dream that one day we would be married. So the next morning was Sunday, after church I told her I had something to tell her, she thought to herself here it comes he is going to breakup with me. We were sitting in my truck, it was cold, I shared my dream with her and she started to cry, the windows completely fogged up. Her dad came and knocked on the glass to see if everything was fine, we said its ok we just need a few minutes. As far as a proposal, that didn't happen it was just assumed that we were getting married and after 7 months of dating we were married. Something funny that happened to me, we had been dating about 2 weeks and I finally got up the courage to ask her if i could kiss her, she said yes, thats when it happened I got a nose bleed, I guess the excitement made my pressure go up, as a kid i would get them randomly even while sleeping.
