Deuteronomy 22:5 (ESV) “A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God." Is the only scripture that I recall that forbids crossdressing.
In this passage the man's "clothing" means a man's accessory like his armor, weapon, belt, etc. I take it that it is unquestionably a male article that men use in being a man. Like a man in the military.
The woman's "clothing" is a covering, like a shawl, robe, dress, etc. Again, unquestionably a woman's garment that makes me think modesty, humility, & honoring the virgin, married, aspects of a woman. I could be wrong on this part, but the garment is a covering garment. Only associated with women.
Yet, men & women have always had similar clothing (pants, robes, shirts), or like clothing, in addition to clothes, or articles, that are sex specific (bra, maternity, dresses). Men & women both wear socks & shoes but don't have ulterior motives for doing so.
The prohibition of this passage seems to be about the sex specific clothes. Nothing Bible really says why, or what circumstances are behind the making of the law. So, any commenting would be speculative. Most commentary tells of confusing the clear identification of the sex for the other. Trying to pass one's self off as the other for trickery of sexual pleasure, lifestyle, or identifying as the other sex. The reasons could be correct, but then again it does sound somewhat specific to our times.
All we get is that we are not to do it. I would think God wants us to honor His creation & not confuse, or lie, about our sex. That's just my thought though.
I personally do not wear women's panties. But, I do not have a problem if a man wants to. Both sex's under wear are so similar that it is not a huge distinction of the sex. Yet, I would say no to the activity if it were associated with trying to be the other sex.
Other clothes that are only certain sex specific I would say you better be disguising yourself to not be captured by the enemy. Men crossdressing lingerie, dresses, or bras is too specific & not needed.
