The Two Become One

a limerick-writing adventure

He put the pen down, and re-read it. “I think that works,” he thought to himself. He tested the scansion one more time, whispering the verse out quietly.

“There we go,” he thought, “my first risqué poem is finished!”

He had written it as something of a memorial of their wedding day many years before. The verse put a smile on his face, and he was hoping his wife would enjoy it too.

Some years before, he and his bride had both felt quite challenged when talking with another Christian couple. The husband and wife had seemed far more comfortable talking about their body bits, sexual adventures, triumphs, and insecurities than they were. It had crystallized their thinking. One of those deep and meaningful conversations ensued, which culminated—or perhaps ejaculated—into a challenge to improve their investment in the erotic and hold each other accountable to it. Thus began a fun journey of curiosity, honesty, and experimentation. They had a few trip-ups along the way, but many great joys and memories while learning to better appreciate the wonder of God in the beauty of intimacy.

The latest leg of this journey had been a recent realization that neither of them was very good at verbalizing their sexual thoughts or expectations. They didn’t have the words, phrases, or gumption to often speak what was going on internally in their intimate life. Upon reflection, they realized they’d missed many sexy opportunities and created misunderstandings over the years. How could they improve their sex talk?

A few weeks ago, he told her, “I’m going to try writing poems for you. Maybe I can find my voice through them?”

For her part, his wife had agreed to begin using a few choice words in the bedroom that she had previously considered “taboo” and not very ladylike. She had kept up her end of the bargain, and they had both enjoyed the urgency, passion, and humor that her new vocabulary was adding to their lovemaking!

He had seen a few limericks over the years and appreciated it as a rather bawdy form of poetry. Perhaps this was his kind of poem? And after a little research, he had quickly decided that a sonnet was way beyond his ability. A limerick he would write!

Having finally put aside the time, he was flummoxed by how to start. “Well,” he thought, “what about a reflection on our wedding day.” They had both taken their promises before God and their “village” seriously, and so his first poetic endeavor had developed from there.

With the words now decided, he began writing them out neatly on a colored piece of cardstock, thinking he would place it on her pillow as he left the house for her to find it later in the day.

The Two become One ~ a wedding day limerick

“Do you offer her love in God’s sight?”…
“Will you ‘honor’ and treat him right?”…
“Yes” they both said,
Then later in bed,
He was ‘on-her’ and ‘off-her’ all night!

It was the start of a new era.

MattBZG… I loved your limerick so much I felt inspired. I loved the background info before the poetry too. I was SO inspired I wrote a multi-limerick poem. I will be submitting it to MH. It is not as poetic and subtle as yours. My post with my multi-limerick poem will hopefully appear in about a month I suppose.

Hiya, thank you, I am pleased to hear it inspired you. May your poems bring lots of fun to your marriage too. I have enjoyed writing them and now have been working on incorporating another old one into a short story and getting ready to post… so we might soon need a whole new limerick infused genre !!!
      Cheers
