The Car Wreck
*BAM!!*
I sat there in the car, my ears ringing. I had just been preparing to turn onto the side street to our apartment complex, when a car turned and accelerated into the center lane where my car was waiting, and struck head on, no brakes applied, no warning.
I continued to sit there, staring blankly, tears rolling down my weathered face (a common occurrence immediately after a concussion).
A woman in her thirties walked over to the car. “Sir? Sir? Are you okay?” she asked.
I tried to answer, but only stumbled on my words before sobbing softly, tears running down my face again.
Fortunately, the other party appeared to be unharmed. A traffic policeman had been nearby, and when he saw the accident, he pulled his car over, turned on his lights, and blocked the lane.
I tried to get out of the car and walk, but the sharp pain in my knee made that difficult. So, I simply stood there and tried to put my weight on my good leg, but after a few seconds I realized even that would be difficult. A sudden wave of dizziness hit me, so I leaned against the side of the car like a boxer leaning against the ropes.
The policeman came over. “Sir, please stay in your car; paramedics are on the way.” He was a tall, young, dark-haired Caucasian man who reminded me a bit of the old pictures of my father at that age; that was reassuring. My shoulders slumped and I let out one long final sob as he helped me back to my seat.
Late that night, I arrived home from the emergency room in an Uber. They didn’t have to admit me, thankfully. I had a severe bruise and a hairline fracture in my knee, a chipped tooth, and also a low-grade concussion, but thankfully nothing worse.
As I entered the front door, I noticed a delicious smell. Vanessa was standing at the kitchen counter wearing a lovely dress that showed off her ample cleavage, which caught my eyes and directed them lower to the three steaming bowls resting before her on the counter.
“I wanted to make everything you like, Honey,” she said.
As I gingerly made my way toward her, she ran over to me, embraced me, and slowly helped me to my favorite chair. Once I was seated, she rubbed my shoulders gently.
“You’re so wonderful,” I said.
She hummed softly in her beautiful voice, gently kissing my cheeks and neck.
“I’m so tired,” I said.
Vanessa then began to feed me small amounts of the foods she had prepared.
“I don’t think I can eat a lot right now. They gave me anti-nausea meds, and the concussion isn’t a bad one, but I still don’t want to overdo it. Can you just hold me for awhile?” I asked.
She kneeled beside me, took a wet washcloth, and gently wiped my forehead and face, before taking off my shirt and leaning her head against my chest, her fingers gently playing with my thick chest hair.
She began to hum softly once more, before speaking. “I love hearing your heartbeat, John. So full of love for me.”
“I will always love you, Vanessa. My best friend, my lover, and my sister in Christ.”
I couldn’t tell you much more about that night. My memories are a bit clouded. But I can tell you that I felt the undergirding love of my wife, which got me through that rough night, and many other rough days and nights as well.
…for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.
Amen.

This is a story of love. The passion you n Vanessa share is clearly coming out of caring and kind love. That is how marriage should be. The foundation for the love and passion is the friendship – certainly including caring for each other in rough times.
I have had experiences very similar to this experience you describe in this story. I appreciate you sharing it.
I heard a quote by a married couple that survived the holocaust. They said, “Love is what you’ve been through together.”
It’s awful that you were in an accident, but the tender love and care between you and Vanessa is beautiful.
Your stories move me in a very special way. That deep friendship and loyalty you and Vanessa share is so beautiful, so inspiring. I love how she cares for you after you've gone through some difficult accidents, and how you care for her. The bond you share is evidenced by your mutual faithful dependability and presence. May something as lovely come to me!
Amazing. Thanks. I needed that.
