The Night He Asked Me To Marry Him

Hello, my dear Marriage Heat family! I know I mentioned my darling husband’s marriage proposal in our courtship story but with your new category I couldn’t resist sharing mine more fully.

It was December of 1981, and I was 20 years old. I was in Narvik, Norway, performing open-air with my two female friends. The northern lights looked so beautiful. I prayed before the show, wanting everything to go the way God wanted. My mom, grandma, and my younger sisters were among the audience filming us.

Then the performance was over… but not before a special guest came onstage. I didn’t expect my future husband to be there! A stage person attached a microphone to him. I did not know what to expect at all. But he smiled as he took my hand, got down on one knee and presented an open, white ring box with my grandma’s diamond ring inside!

“Will you marry me?” he asked,

“Yes, of course, I’ll marry you!” I happily replied with no hesitation whatsoever.

He lifted me up in an embrace and spun me around before he put the ring on my finger and kissed me while everyone cheered and applauded – and my middle sister caught it all on film! We were so in love, and I always knew that the man who is now my husband is the only one for me. I couldn’t be the bride of another (except Christ, of course).

When we came down from the stage I embraced my family, and my grandma hugged me tight and said, “My dear, I knew you’d find a great man, and my engagement ring is yours now. I give it to you because the two of you remind me of how your grandpa and I were, right up until he passed away.”

She gave me one more tight embrace. My grandpa had passed 15 years before but I remember how he was a gentleman, and how even in old age he still did things like pull a chair out for my grandma, or help her with her coat. This is how my husband is now, and I knew from watching my grandparents that it’s as it should be.

We all – including my now fiance – went to dinner to celebrate. The waitress at the restaurant could tell we were celebrating something, and so she gave us free food! It was delicious! We especially enjoyed eating under the northern lights! Praise the Lord!

We all flew home together and immediately started to plan our wedding! We still have the footage of the night my husband asked me to marry him!

That is so great that they all traveled there for the special occasion! What a blessed memory to look back on for a lifetime! I know it happened along time ago – but congratulations! 🙂
